Pittsburgh Medic One went into service on August 28, 1975, the first unit of the City of Pittsburgh's new Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. From a start of four ambulances, the Bureau of EMS has grown into a world renowned pre-hospital care system that now includes 13 ambulances and two rescue trucks, along with combined staffing for River Rescue and Haz Mat, with the other Bureaus of the Public Safety Department. Based in the Homewood neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh on North Dallas Avenue, Medic One responds to over 5,000 calls for help each year.
